前些日子，为美国富布莱特-海斯访华团做有关中国历史和文化的讲座，Fullbright-Hays Seminars Abroad ：History and Culture in China，美国教授诗人Samuel Hinton赠我一本他的诗集：The Road To Kenema ，随手一翻就翻到了这首《母亲》，尝试着翻译如下。

 Samuel Hinton is professor of Educational Studies at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond Kentucky. His first anthology of poems Songs of An Immigrant was published by Pensar Press in 1987.

In uterine senrenity                   静逸的子宫，

Carried me nine months            养我九月整，

Saintly, while I lay snug in         神圣我隐躺，

Umbilical haven                        脐带庇护所，

Savored your food,                   享你的给养。

The mammary fluid,                  甘甜的乳汁，

Your ladle’s sizzler                   激动的给与，

That zeroed hunger.                  饥饿不袭我。

Overbearing patience                 耐心地看护，

Watched my adolenscence,         我长大成人，

You would not shout,                 没有训斥声、

Nor spank or pout.                   亦无棍棒痛。

Always composed,                   泰然自若中，

Your love it showed,                 母爱放光辉，

That mothers are bred,                母亲后天养，

Not born as is said.                   绝非生而是。

While I am gone,                    当我离你去，

Your baby son,                      最小一儿子，

You ebbed away                     你亦老去了，

Oh luminous ray.                    犹如一束光。

May you abide                      愿你老人家

The other side,                      生活在彼岸

And rest eternal                     永恒安息地

Forever while.                      永远的安息
